HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NANCY ROYCE!
Hooray Hooray for the 8th of May!

RUFF REVUE ON KXLY!
If any of you are up very early tomorrow (Friday May 9), Murungu and some of his buddies
from the Ruff Revue will be dancing on KXLY between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m!!
Not sure how it will work, we will probably be the fillers between newsbytes.
And of course, there are no guarantees as to how it will go.
Murungu is no more of a morning person than I am... Why did I volunteer for this?
Oh, and if anyone is sleepless at 430 a.m. I could use a wake-up call!
Thanks, Diana

Our DVR didn't, so I missed it. (Are you surprised I was snoring?)
So, if anyone recorded it, please share! Nancy Z says,
"Karen & Raven; Diane & Oliver; Pam & Mena; Diana & Murungu; and Dewey and I were there."
The interview was about the Cheney Mayfest, so not a lot about the RR. But a great op anyway.

We're back from Clicker Expo in Kentucky!
Pat and I had a great time! Now to plan a date
to share what we learned! Vote for a date?

Potluck - Southern Comfort Food!!

Sunday, May 4th - 4:30!!

Pat is bringing Corn Puddin!
Kim is bringing MISSISSIPPI MUD PIE!! YUM!!

I'm still thinking on it ... a good mint julep recipe maybe?
Maybe just some "sweet tea"
(We tasted Kentucky Bourbon - *shudders*)

From Cathy:
How about a Friday night soon?? Maybe April 25th or perhaps May 2nd? I could do either!

From Carol:
April 25th I will be at the circus with my grandson, but May 2nd works for me!

From Kim:
I think May 2 works for me! Just planning to pick up my race number for Bloomsday, but that is the only thing I have on my calendar right now. :o)

From Pat:
Oh, too bad. I can't meet on May 2nd, or at least the filming schedule has me way south of town from 4:30 - 6:30. I could come straight from there, if that is the best time for everyone else, which so far it sounds like it is. But considering that she wants evening light in the sky, and knowing that 6:30 is too soon for that, (which you'd think she might have noticed) and knowing how other movie shoots have gone, I'm guessing that there would be a good chance I wouldn't make it until a few hours later. I can meet the 25th or May 4th. Sorry.

From Nancy Z-
I can't do May 2 because I have a social obligation with some of my charges from the circus.... I mean, work. I could drag myself in later on May 4, after Bloomsday. Don't adjust on my account, though! I just sent this as an FYI that if it is May 2, I won't be there. Z

Q of the week
Cathy poses this question to the group:
Toby, 11 mo Lab x NM

My dog is extremely destructive. He eats anything ... Eats, not chews. I am very concerned that he is headed towards a surgery for bowel obstruction if I can't get him to stop. He is currently separated from my older dog during the day due to his destructive behavior. He is much calmer with the other dog present, however destructive. He also is a poop eater with the only deterrent being a remote shock collar that works most of the time although he continually tries. I hate using the collar, however this appears to be the only thing that works (have tried changing food, placing things in the food, using a leash, etc).

“Coaching People to Train Their Dogs”
Last Call: Registration deadline for the workshops “Coaching People to Train Their Dogs” is April 15, 2008.
Course I - July 14-July 18, 2008
Course II - July 20-July 24, 2008

We will be working from the second edition of the “Coaching. . .” book. The original printing sold out more quickly than we had imagined. Folks are saying the book and course are very helpful in preparation for taking the CPDT test. I have some fun new exercises planned for both the chicken and dog work in Course II. UPDATED HANDBOOKS - NO FOLDERS!
The new order of books have a yellow section in the back
with all the handouts and homework sheets previously in the folder.

The only inserts are the kid rules, make-up info,
and flyer about the Behavior 101 lectures.

Dogs First Week

Often there are one or two who didn't catch the part of the confirmation that says
"people only week one." Do not make them feel bad. Welcome them and their dog
and get them settled in with a stuffed Kong to keep them busy. I bring this up again
as I had a past student registering a new puppy today who wanted to clarify that his
puppy wasn't supposed to come week one - because he "remembered a poor
woman being 'ridiculed' for bringing her dog week one" when he attended before
and he "wanted to be sure it didn't happen to him." While I realize that no one really
'ridiculed' anyone, if it stood out to this fellow as such, we need to always be
mindful of how others perceive what is said. Positive with people and puppies!!

If a dog is shy, I will recommend that the student bring it to week one to get in
an extra day to acclimate the dog to the class room before the rest arrive week two.

BEHAVIOR 101
Instructors who would like to sit in on ANY of the Behavior Lectures
are welcome, FREE, as often as you would like to attend.

Be sure to let your students know that
Friday March 7th at 6:30 is What is My Dog Saying?
Leadership will be the 14th and
Friday the 21st is the new
Positive Solutions for Problem Behavior class!

The body language lecture is ever changing with new video -
even if you've seen it before, you'd see new stuff if you come again!

CONGRATULATIONS, CATHY & HILDE AND KIM & MACK!

Thank you, Kim for stocking pet supplies for me!!
And did you see the store room? Awesome job, Kim! THANK YOU!!

SUE AND BRIAN
From Linda Hider:
Hello Everyone, Susan asked me to let everyone know about some recent developments.
As many of you know, Brian has not been feeling well lately. He had a colonoscopy recently.
At that time they found a tumor which is probably malignant. The doctors will be doing further
tests in the next few days to determine a course of treatment. I'm sure that all of you join me
in letting Brian and Susan know that our thoughts and prayers are with them.
On a brighter note they have a new addition to the family.
They went to Montana this weekend and brought back Tilly,
an 8 week old, 17 pound German shepherd puppy.
She's got lots of drive and is keeping everyone entertained.

Update:
Hello everyone, We would like to thank every one for their support and understanding.
It has been a scary time for us, but the good news is that Brian's CAT scans showed no other tumors. The one in his colon is a moderatley differentiated cancer. (Which isn't too bad as cancers go).
They should be able to resect that piece and hopefully he will not require more treatment.
It is a type that responds to treatment if needed. The surgeon will biopsy a variety of places to
check and let us know. Brian meets with the surgeon on the 5th. It is the same doctor that did
the really extensive work on me. I know how well I turned out after 3 surgeries, so we are
comfortable that Brian is in good hands. We will keep you updated as we know more.
We are very thankful that it is not as bad as it could have been. Susan and Brian

Make-ups
I just can't be a hard ass when it comes to make-ups. Cathy is available or you can
schedule private make-ups with your students for $25 per 1/2 hour on Sundays or whenever.
But if your student is able to make it to another class that week, they are still welcome
to drop in to another class to pick up missed classes.

WIND AND SIGNS
Our sign out front got blown down by the wind and we are waiting on the
repair people to fix the bent frame so we can get it back up. This makes us hard to find
in the dark with new classes starting next week. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.
They are also supposed to be eliminating the grafitti on our south wall as well.

2008 Advanced schedule
Here are the results of the hard work at the meeting!

Please go over the dates carefully and let me know if I messed anything up!

New Ideas for Next Year!
One of the best parts of going to a conference is sitting around networking with other
trainers. Terry Ryan mentioned some things she is doing that sound interesting
in regards to offering 1/2 hour private tutoring for students.
Terry just covers class lesson catch-up, not behavior counseling stuff.
Trish King provides private sessions at her shelter - training and behavior.
Of course, new ideas require trainers to carry them out!

Make-ups.
Terry doesn't offer make-ups. If a student misses class, they can't just drop in somewhere else.
To make sure they don't fall behind, she offers 1/2 our private sessions. I think she said
they charge $25 for the 1/2 hour. My thought is that there are a lot of people who miss class
"just because" they forgot or had a drop-in visitor - not due to actual illness. Having them
pay for the alternative option to get their missed class info sounds like a great idea.
I don't think it would necessarily need to be "private" - we could combine for a Puppy/Headstart
make-up or Prep make-up and have more than one family in attendance - semi-private?

Private one-on-one help.
Have you ever had a student come up after class and ask "do you ever give private help?"
Sometimes they just aren't getting it or their dog is so distracted that the lesson is lost.
I think there are a lot of people who would jump at the chance for a private one-on-one lesson.

My thought is perhaps on a Sunday afternoon (and/or weekday afternoon?) an instructor could
spend a couple of hours at the Ruff House and make a little extra $ and help a few extra students.
We could have a single instructor who wanted to be "the Sunday person" or rotate and pre-arrange
who would teach on which Sunday, etc. Or reserve spots to work with your own students.
I'm thinking maybe a white board on the wall at the RH for student sign-up? Pre-pay, no refunds.
1/2 hour time slots would be scheduled back to back. If they are late, they lose whatever time
they missed. They have to leave on time because the next scheduled student is waiting to come in.
What to charge - how to market it - how to make it work?
Thoughts?

Here's what I've come up with so far.

Free Puppy Socialization Sessions?
For people who are pre-registered and paid for Preschool/PK and want
some extra social experience and for those currently enrolled who want extra social time.

1/2 hour sessions on a drop-in basis.

Polishing Class - Advanced ongoing class.
This wasn't from the conference - Diane & Nancy agreed to do this before we left. ;-)
This revolving advanced class will be held on Thursday nights at 7:30PM. Advanced students
(FS grads & higher) who want to come play/practice - can register for 4 week blocks that they can use as it
suits their schedule. So the class will be comprised of new faces and changing numbers,
not the same faces for a month.
1 hour sessions on a start when you register basis.
This class needs a cute name ...

Q of the Week!

Febreeze Noticeables
ok, it's a new ad on primetime TV for a plug-in air freshener.
What behavioral concept is this room freshener developed around?

[The plug-in has two reservoires, with two different alternating scents.
It cycles turning one scent on for awhile and then switches to the other scent.]

Part two:

Yes, another commercial!
The Dyson Slim commercial - what behavioral concept explains
why my resident dogs no longer respond, but now ignore the squeaky toy noises while
the visiting pup alerts and paces around the television?

[The ad shows someone using the vacuum for a variety of uses,
(rug, stairs, hard floor, etc) each change in setting, the
vacuum "sound" is another pitch of recorded squeeky toy noise.]

Cathy has jumped in with her answers ... any one else??
Yay! Kim has responded with a couple of good guesses
and Pat, who is taking her CPDT soon - good luck, Pat!

Here are multiple choice options:

A. Desensitization
B. Habituation
C. Adaptation
D. Learned Irrelevance

Dr. Ray Coppinger & Ken McCort Demystify Evo Devo!
Live in Austin, Texas February 15-17, 2008
Evo-Devo (Evolutionary Development) A new field is rapidly developing within what we think of as Animal Behavior. As geneticists and neurobiologists dig deeper into what makes an animal behave the way it does, the genes and nerves are revealing the importance of the environment during all stages of development. The new field is called Evolutionary Development, affectionately known in academic departments as Evo Devo. The familiar nature/nurture discussions are no longer relevant. Science has gone beyond such questions as, "Does the nurturing of an animal determine its outcome or is its future written in its genes?" "Are Rottweilers an aggressive breed, inheriting genes that should be outlawed?"

Attend this 3-day seminar and you, too, can be on the cutting edge of the latest biological discoveries!

Positive Trainer Passes
I just heard on a web list that Patty Ruzzo (good friend and training partner to Leslie Nelson)
passed away on May 4th. Here is her obituary. She was only 56 - apparently complications from a stroke.
Her video "The Power of Positive Training" with Ted Turner & Leslie Nelson is in our RH library.
What an awesome quote in tribute to her memory by Suzanne Clothier:
"In the darkness of your grief, may you hear a quiet thumping in every direction. It is the sound of
tails wagging around the world, a sort of dog applause for a great spirit who gave so much."

Dog Flu
Check out this article in case any of your students ask.
I find it perplexing that the first lead sentence is "A new, highly contagious and
sometimes deadly canine flu is spreading in kennels and at dog tracks around the
country, veterinarians said yesterday." But then later in the article quotes a veterinarian saying,
"The hysteria out there is unbelievable, and the misinformation is incredible," said Dr.
Ann E. Hohenhaus, chief of medicine at the Animal Medical Center in New York."

update from Lisa: "I talked to Dr. Wood and asked her about it and her response
was, "It is nothing. I just got some information about it from WSU and it is nothing
to worry about" Typical panic, hysteria and distorted facts.

RIPPLES ON A POND
This time from Iowa:
Hello, Your web site and articles on dog behavior rock! I am president (volunteer position) of Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa, a nonprofit organization committed to helping dogs in counties without animal shelters. Would it be acceptable to reprint one of your articles, giving credit as you outline on your site, in each issue of our e-newsletter? Some people no doubt print and read it, others read it on. Just making sure this is acceptable. Thanks! -- Nancy Crist, Copywriter/Public Relations Specialist

Article Thanks
Hi there! I was looking for another article and came across your website. I am very impressed and particularly like the article about the overstimulated hyper dog as I am the "proud" owner of an easily excited, immature nearly 5 yo Welsh Springer spaniel who I attempt to do competitive obedience with. While I have been doing some of the things you suggest, it is good to see a whole programme and I will use it. I also plan to print off some of the other articles for people in my obedience classes. It all comes back around *S*
Hi, I am sure you don't remember me but I visited Diamonds in the Ruff Back in about 2000. I was being trained under Liz Droege with PETsMART. I will never forget the Positive influence that the Ruff House and Liz had on me. The access to Books and videos got me started down the correct path. I continued training at PETsMART in Montana until a little over one year ago, when I moved to Wyoming and started my own program in a community with few dog trainers. I now teach a variety of classes at my home and at several local small towns. Thanks

Thank you, instructors and assistants!
Your depth of knowledge and ability to size up a situation and give humane and well-thought out advice is priceless.
Thank you for striving to be the best help you can to our students and their dogs!

I once counseled a student who was having seroius trouble with aggression in a class at another school. I asked what the instructor had recommended that she do. She answered, "Well, she just said, 'don't let him do that.'" ????
Not at our school! Keep up the good work, guys!
